Eight miles south east of Stockport and 15 miles from Manchester, New Mills is situated at the North Western edge of the Peak District. Residents don’t have far to walk before they find themselves in beautiful Derbyshire countyside. The town is situated where the rivers Goyt and Sett meet, on the border of Cheshire, and stands above the Torrs, a 70 feet deep gorge.
At the time of writing, New Mills has a population of approximately 10,000, and includes the built-up areas of Newtown and Low Leighton, the civil parish that includes the villages and hamlets of Thornsett, Hague Bar, Rowarth, Brookbottom, Gowhole, and most of Birch Vale.
Many old mill-town stone buildings characterise the centre of New Mills. However, the heritage of multiple rail and road links to Stockport and Manchester have also attracted modern residential developments.New Mills, being set in scenic greenbelt landscape while being close to shops, services and employment in neighbouring towns of Stockport, Hyde, Glossop, Buxton and Macclesfield, balances the rural and the urban perfectly.
Part of the New Mills appeal derives from the past – the ancient geology that has bestowed the deep gorge within the town centre and the heritage of industrialisation over many centuries.
Newmills.org not only charts the history of the town, but also, and perhaps more importantly it provides up to date information on the activities, amenities and services that New Mills has to offer. If you need a video shop or a bargain booze that is in easy reach, we can help.
